Sneakers

Staring at his sneakers
Parked for eternity next to his side of the bed
I feel the weight of my grief,
A mantle of lead on my shoulders.

My own mantra haunts me.
“One foot in front of the other”
I said as we persevered together.
Those were happier times
When hope still flickered.

Staring at his sneakers
Parked for eternity next to his side of the bed
I am reminded
That only one of us
Still walks in the shadow of death.

  1. ” …only one of us/Still walks in the shadow of death”: so powerful and heartbreaking and true. Sometimes light flickers inside the shadow, and the shadow is always our companion to the light of our lives.
I just finished the large box of dental floss my husband had ordered before he died and it still hurt a bit three years later. Thank you for letting us walk with you. Blessings on your journey.

    1. Thank You. I’m finding it so hard. Even coming back to read the comments took me back into that feeling, no doubt why it has taken me a few days. You are such a role model for me, and I thank you for that.
